Why Multi-Supplier Procurement Becomes Complex
A typical marine HVAC package may include chillers, AHUs, FCUs, pumps, supply and exhaust fans, fire and smoke dampers, control panels, thermostats, valves, insulation and interfaces with the BMS or fire alarm system.
The accommodation package can simultaneously include:
- Marine wall and ceiling panels
- Marine doors and windows
- Prefabricated wet units

Coordinate Equipment Interfaces Before Delivery
A fire damper is not simply a mechanical item inside an air duct. Depending on the vessel’s control philosophy, it may also provide status signals to the fire alarm system or BMS.
An AHU can require coordination between:
- Power supply and motor control
- Temperature and differential pressure sensors
- Fire damper signals
- BMS communication
- Chilled water valves
If these interfaces are only discussed after equipment reaches the shipyard, modifications can become expensive and delay installation. Early technical coordination reduces this risk.
Apply Marine-Specific Selection Criteria
Onboard equipment cannot always be selected in the same way as equipment for a building or land-based industrial project. Marine projects may require consideration of vessel voltage and frequency, ambient conditions, corrosion resistance, IP protection, vibration, inclination, limited space, maintenance access, fire safety, class requirements and material certification.
Depending on the vessel, international projects may also require approval or documentation from classification societies such as DNV, ABS, BV, LR, RINA, CCS or other IACS members. Supplier evaluation must therefore go beyond price alone.

Plan Space, Access and Maintenance
A chiller, AHU or pump may meet its required capacity but still be unsuitable if maintenance access has not been considered.
Shipyards should confirm whether heat exchangers, filters, motors and access panels can be removed; whether equipment can pass through the installation route; and whether the vessel structure provides adequate support for lifting and maintenance.
These practical checks can materially affect the final equipment configuration.
Manage Documentation as a Deliverable
Physical equipment is only one part of marine supply. Project documentation may include general arrangement drawings, technical datasheets, electrical diagrams, control philosophy, pump curves, selection data, material and class certificates, installation instructions, O&M manuals and spare-parts lists.
Managing these files across many independent suppliers adds workload for engineering and procurement teams. A coordinated approach creates one clearer route for document follow-up and package status.
Compare Total Project Impact, Not Unit Price Alone
The lowest equipment price does not always produce the lowest project cost. A cheaper component can create more engineering work, require onboard modification or delay construction because supporting documentation is incomplete.
